Reflections on Business Ownership and Motherhood
As I approach the third birthday of my interior design business, Anna Cordle Home, I have come to realise that there is no such thing as a 'regular' week. I have my frameworks and boundaries about how I work, and a clear structure of things that have to be done to keep things ticking over, but each week is, delightfully, unique. This past week has been no different.
When I set out to run my own business, it was because I had witnessed women go it alone so that they could work around family life. No one claimed it was easy, but every one claimed it was worth it. I wanted to find a way of working that meant I could deliver excellence to my clients whilst still being absolutely present for my children. In reality, that means allowing flex into my working day - the ability to shuffle my diary around to accommodate the school commitments, medical appointments and all the myriad unpredictable things that crop up when you have kids.
This week, I had a full to do list: Client work, coaching calls (I have an excellent new coach), marketing and admin tasks - and yet when the school rang on Tuesday to see if I could join a school trip to help with my middle child's class on Thursday, I was so glad to be able to shuffle things around and make it work. My sweet girls are still at an age when having mummy on a school trip is ridiculously exciting - so what a joy it was to hang out with her and her friends for the day. The work got done - a late night on Wednesday and a little catch up on Saturday morning -but oh my goodness, totally worth it. If you're a mum, a founder, a juggler and holder of all the things, I salute you!
